"Alferes" Mill

“Alferes” mill (also referred as “azenha”) is a stage of Mértola’s Municipality Watermills Circuit (a set of 3 routes crossing the council from north to south), and also a stop in the Bread Cycle Route.

Standing at “Vascão” stream, 4km from S.Bartolomeu da Via Glória village, “Alferes” mill - establishment going back to the 9th century - displays an unusual three milling lines, consequence of its waters volume and extension. The settlement is composed by the miller’s house, animal folds stone structures, a farming lowland and a bread oven.

In a limited perimeter, means and resources were set together so the miller could deliver his craft, but also crop a field, fish in the stream waters and pools, collect nourishment in the vicinities and be a beekeeper.
